I have never heard of that Broadway-Musical before, until a friend came to me and asked me for a favor. He plays Nicky in Avenue Q and built quite a few of the puppets needed for the show which was shown in the Knox Community Arts Centre in Melbourne.

It was hilarious!

Marsupilami rocks!

One of my favourite comic series is that of Spirou and Fantasio. And in there early years when it was Franquin who drew them they were acomponied by the weird creature called Marsupilami. With the time you get really attached to the little fellow.

When Franquin stopped with Spirou he took the rights for the Marsupilami with him so that in the later episodes he is missed. Franquin continued with a spinoff series solely around the Marsupilami and his family (a different marsupilami though), which I didn't enjoy as much. He is awesome as a sidekick but as main character... there was something missing...

Nevertheless he is cool!

Some of his characteristics are: being amphibious, laying eggs that hatch, having an eight-meter-tail, loves eating fleas and piranhas and talking Huba huba!

Oliver, that cheeky boy, always plays with his food.

As we packed our stuff together because we prepared to move we found his secret food stack!

Under a piece of marble platter that was sitting on the floor, he kept tossing his bits underneath and apparently wasn't able to get them out again. We also found some under the fridge. He is just a nutcase!

Killer Bunnies - my first own cards!

As if we couldn't get enough of Killer Bunnies, getting 55 new cards with every booster pack, I started designing some of my own on blank cards.

A cat in bunny costume! It doesn't go onto the bunny pile after discarding and it can't be used to win the game, because when getting examined closer it reveals to be a fake bunny. It can be harmed by weapons and has to be fed because as part of the disguise it will hide cabbage and water behind its back.

A Play Immediately card that kills nearly all of the bunnies in the Bunny Circle. Really nasty one!

World of Warcraft is a well-known online computer game. I don't know too much about it but as my partner asked me for a shirt with this emblem I said yes.

Most important was this paw in the middle. I think she would have been happy just with that. But I was eager to proof myself if I can manage to paint the rest too.

I think I can book this as a success, eh? The white chalk helpmarks were removed before I fixed the paint with ironing.

Killer Bunnies!

A new game aera has started! We discovered Killer Bunnies! This is a fun card game with a starter deck and several booster packs. As being able to expand the game slowly it was one of the reasons why we bought it. And we never regreted it!

The starter deck comes in blue including the first booster which is yellow. Goal of the game: get the winning Magic Carrot! Unfortunatly you can only win if you have a bunny alive. So actually the game is about getting carrots and killing your opponents (or sometimes your own) bunnies!

There are a lot of ways how to kill bunnies. You can starve them, attack them with a Kitchen Whisk, Crow Bars, Quite Irascible Diffractable Cheese Balls, Boomerangs, Chocolate Covered Anti-Matter Raisins, Cyber Bunny and so on...

To protect your bunnies you may use Lucky Clover, Heavenly Halo, The Magic Spatula or similar good cards.In this game we played the blue, yellow, purple, red and orange booster. In the middle of the table are the carrots (you can buy, choose or steal), the shops (for cabbage, water, defense or pawns) and the draw pile.
You always (!) have 5 cards on your hands and two cards down. Playing requires thinking ahead. Normal run cards have to go through the bottom run and top run card position until you can play it. Then there are special cards, very special cards, money and play immidietly cards (where you normally have to kill your own bunny).
The dice are for use when you get attacked or you want to gamble or get something nice out of supply cards.

All in all, it looks complicated, but it is not. You slowly get towards more complicated game play but you learn along.

As still not even close to getting the highest stack of game cards (there are still the green, twilight white, stainless steel, perfectly pink, wacky khaki and ominous onyx boosters to go!) so far it already takes us about 2 hours to go through a game of three people! But it is fun in every minute!

Thats why I give it 10 out of 10 points!

Backyard Cats

Backyard cats are the sort of cats that just happen to be there one day and refuse to go away again. So you start feeling sorry for them and start feeding them. After that they won't ever go away again. They will stay wild and won't let you touch them but also go begging for more food every time they see you.

And of course they will get kitten every now and again. And besides them being wild backyard cats the kitten are still adorable!

This fellow is called "Fleabomb". Guess why! He is a little older than the other three.

The tabby one must be a girl! She is so cute and decent! A little Bella!

These ones are made out of a fake pauashell-cane. Yet to be sanded and polished.

These were a try to make something usefull out of an old fake-agate-cane. Well, nice. But not more.
And these that look like bright sunflowers are original dragon-eye-cane. But I like the idea of them being sunflowers too!

It took a long time until this new cage got ready. But not because it's a lot of work it was rather the lack of time. I started building it in August and then two weeks nothing happened and so on...
But I think the result is worth showing!
Here the right side with her house (she doesn't use it much) and the closed door to the outside.

The left side with her wheel in the "deep side"... And her sand bath on top of the platform.

It is a lot of fun if you can just be busy for yourself and the product is something nice to look at. As here as I was working away the polymer clay canes I had been storing for some better days. All in all came out 13 pens and a lot of beads.

As I worked a lot with translucent clay there is a big difference between before and after the baking.

And here are the beads. Those kiwi beads are the rest of my kiwi cane. Maybe one day I'll make a new one. I really like it.

Back to the Pearl!

After some time of storing my Fimo-canes in the fridge I finally found it the time to take them out again and make something nice.

Here are the results: Kiwi-cane in pearls and cubes.

And mixing my Monarch-, Blue rose- and Red rose-cane I got some interesting results. I made a pen, 4 double-sided rectangles and some one-sided pendants. The rest was made into some pearls.

The Settlers of Catan: Traders and Barbarians

This scenario is a really awsome way to play the settlers! The idea behind it is that the barbarians have destroyed Catan. The Catanian traders now have to set off to carry tools to the marble pit, sand to the glass factory and both back to the ruined castle.
The carriages move along paths either wild or paved. It is always an advantage to move along your own streets.
Coins are recieved if you successfully bring your item to the goal, you need them to pay foreign street owners or in exchange for raw materials.

Playing this game we noticed that we hardly gave a damn on expanding our settlements or moving to other places and build new settlements. The roads had our full attention. We carried the items to and fro.

But it was jolly good fun! A totally new experience playing the Settlers of Catan!

For me it's a 10 out of 10 points! Hope to play it again soon!

Centaur Boy

Once again I started a little modelling with Fimo. This little guy is made out of Puppenfimo(c). He is made out of one piece before baking.

After baking I coloured him with pastel chalk and fixing it.

The hair was added last, I'm still working on doing this better. Me not so satisfied yet. ;-)

Bohnanza!

Do you like beans? Baked beans, soy beans, kidney beans, black-eyed beans, coffee beans and many more...

Bohnanza is a German-styled card game about trading and farming beans. Author is Uwe Rosenberg and the game was first published in 1997.

I remember I first played it 2000 with a group of five people. It is great fun! The more people play the more movement the game has.
The idea is simple. You get bean cards on your hand and can farm 2-3 types of them at the same time. Tricky: you have more bean types on your hands and are not allowed to change the order. So either you have to harvest unprofitably or trade your cards with the other players.

There are also a lot of add-ons. Al Cabohne for example is for 1-2 players. High Bohn can be played with Al Cabohne or Bohnanza, Bohnaparte and La Isla Bohnita can only be played with Bohnanza.

It's a great game but unfortunatly I always lack in people playing with me. So I hardly know the add-ons. Maybe one day I will find someone eager in playing beans! ;-)

My score:
9 out of 10 points! (for Bohnanza)
7 out of 10 points for Al Cabohne (it lacks in the fast moving of Bohnanza)

The Settlers of Catan: Caravan in Catan!

The caravan in Catan is a quite small scenario. You can buy it in a box with several other new scenarios.
Instead of the desert there is an oasis placed in the middle of the island. From here will be the caravans starting. You can continue their route with paying a card of hay and wool. The camels take influence on the points a road or village count. These are the camels of the new version waiting for being placed on the game.

And this is the scenario of the old edition. (Unplayed yet)

Working Holiday Visa

My immigration plans to Australia are a little bit complicated. Well, first things first. I will go this part of my life step by step and at each point I need to check if I can go on to the next point.

First step:

Entering Australia with the Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417).

This visa allows me to be in Oz for one year and to work for a maximum of six months for the same employer.
It is for people between 18 and 30 years. For the application you shouldn't have held your 31. birthday.
After applying you have 12 months to enter Oz. So officially it is possible to enter Oz for one year on the day before your 32. birthday.
You must apply for this visa from outside Oz.
There are no dependent children to travel with you.
You need sufficient funds of money. Approximately 5,000AUD (ca. 2.900 EUR)
You need a return flight or additional money to be able to pay it.

Second step:

Apply for the second Working Holiday Visa.

To be eligable to do so I must complete three months of specified work in regional Australia.
For applications there are the same age rules as for the first visa. So you should have done those three months before your 31. birthday.
If applying from outside Oz you must be outside Oz when getting the visa granted.
If you apply from within Oz you must be within Oz when getting the visa granted. Easy, eh?

Hide & Seek

My russian hamster Michiko surely is a "bigger=better"-hamster. As I can't provide her enough space in her aquarium I thought long about this topic. Letting her run in the living room under supervision was nearly impossible because she woke up when I went to bed. And trust me, I don't go to bed early!

So there was only one way: Letting her run around in the living room on her own. Making sure that there are no cables lying around and no place where she can hurt herself I started trying it.

It's working good for several weeks now. She collects the sunflower seeds I hide for her anywhere and is back in her aquarium in the mornings. I wasn't always sure for that but after hearing a little scratch I was satisfied. I had to close the aquarium over days because of the birds and when I'm at home I leave doors open...

Well, one day I discovered that she made herself a little nest in my shelf. Hidden behind my board games...
A small larder.
And her bed. (Don't notice the torn down wallpaper...)

I had already laid newspaper in this place because she had always liked hiding in there. For long time nothing had changed and suddenly there was all this bedding in there! She carried her toilet paper across the whole living room!

The Game of Life

The Game of Life is a huge board game full of stations in your life. You start moving as a single person in a car, you can choose to go to university, you get a job, an income and you marry. If you get children is luck and if you win or loose money is also a good part luck. Buying life insurances is a very good idea because after you retire you usually have to pay a lot of things.
Instead of dices this game is played with a colourful wheel. Sometimes there are moments in your life where you have to stop. And sometimes you have to decide to go the right way.

This is my car on its way through life. I married a woman and we adopted twins, a girl and a boy.

The game has a lot of charme, maybe because I played it a lot when I was young (I used to marry men, so it really is ages away!).

I give it 8 out of 10 points.

Yes, I confess. I love tonic water. Pure. No gin. Just plain tonic water! And as I'm a curious girl I wanted to try more from my favourite tonic water brand.

My favourites are Indian Tonic Water, Bitter Orange and Ginger Ale. Californian Citrus Summer I discovered new. It's sweet soda and quite ok. I still prefer the bitter taste.

These are some bottles I bought in France. Peach and Coconut are Schweppes© flavours you can't buy in Germany. For whatever reason. They are sweet but I still like them! The yellow tonic bottles are another brand, I haven't tried them yet. But I'm always curious to test drinks.

Goodbye-Shirt

This t-shirt was made under bad omens.

Something happened that has never happened before when fixing the color to the fabric. As I painted the front and back side I placed the shirt in a rather adventurous way in my oven and I think I decided to use the wrong heating style.
Well, I burned it.
It had a brown scar on the backside and when I tried to rub it off I suddenly had a hole in the fabric!

Ok, two possibilities: paint it new or recycle.

I chose to recycle it. To get more traveller style. I cut out the painted fabric parts that luckily were unscared. Then I glued it onto a new shirt to keep it in place while sewing it on.

Some days later I noticed that on the front there were glue spots visible! Ok, I thought about it and searched for some iron patches to hide the spots.

Iron ready, patches placed. A cloth over the first patch, ironing for 3-4 minutes. Turned it over!
I ironed the patch onto the cloth!
Now I got really mad!
I teared a hole into the cloth with trying to get the butterfly off again. Then I glued the first butterfly and the second was perfectly ironed.

Thanks for reading. The story behind the t-shirt is self-explaining. In English it means: "And I'm gone then..."

The Settlers of Catan II and III

I already introduced my all-time-favorite board game: The Settlers of Catan.
The first two expansions showed up soon afterwards.

The Seafarers:
With the settlers setting off to sea there came the era of the seafarers. Finally they could go further than the borders of their island and set off in little ships towards unknown islands and wicked seas. Even the robber became a companion in form of a black pirate ship.
New was also an island hexagon called the gold plate. There is no gold in the game but when you built a village next to it you can choose whatever raw material you like.
For being able to set up ships there had to be a village at the coast. A street can't simply change into ships. I think the settlers are in need of a harbor to arrange their journey in the open seas. A ship costs wood and sheepskin. Well I could imagine something more effective for the sails but they have to use whatever they got.

I love playing freestyle most. This is in simply laying the home island and then building up sea and islands just as you like. The "board" can sometimes reach funny formes.

Cities and Knights:
The next expansion was a sort of conquest. Story is that the vikings are arriving in Catan. There is a small countdown for them (here in the up left corner), and everytime one of the additional dices lands on the black ship it comes closer.
When they arrive Catan you have to check how many cities there are and how many knights to defend them.
Through the game you can activate your knights as protection. There have to be more knights than cities for the Catanians to win. If so the player with the most knights gets a winner point.
If the Catanians are too weaks the vikings win with downgrading a city of the weakest player to a village.
Also there are additional materials you can get earn and trade. They are for building universities, kathedrals and convents. With each upgrade of these three buildings you get bonus features.

Here the red city has achieved the highest upgrade for convents and so is marked as a metropolos. Also the player has set up a city wall, resembled by the plate underneath. This allowes him to have two more raw materials on the hand when the robber comes with dicing the 7.

Result:

The Seafarers are easy to learn and nearly compatible with every other expansion of the settlers. It is very nice to not have to stick to your island.
I give them 10 of 10 points!

The Cities and Knights needs more concentration. It is better for being played seperatly. Playing with 4 dices and having to check knights, special features and the vikings is enough for a game!
I give them 8 out of 10!

Horse in Photoshop©

My goal with this picture was to learn more about Adobe Photoshop©.

First step was to scan an old picture I had drawn years ago. 14 years to be precise! It was a time of many horse-pictures.

Second step was to overpaint the body with a color and mark the white areas as I wanted this to become a pony in pinto-style. For better view I put the background into color too.

Here with the original background and the painting underneath. Already more details in face and body parts.

Here the final result. Mane and tail still in a bit odd color, but all-in-all it helped me a lot to get used to Photoshop©.

Lady Amalthea

Finally finished is Lady Amalthea from the same novel as The Last Unicorn. In facts she is the unicorn. So looking on the logic side those two can never meet.
The book itself from Peter S. Beagle is a world to dream in. I think I already said so before.

Lamingtons

As lamingtons are an Australian dish, this article is in German.

Lamingtons sind eine einfache und leckere Angelegenheit aus Australien. Traditionell werden sie aus Kuchenresten gemacht. Mittlerweile gibt es aber auch dort Lamington-Bleche zu kaufen. Grundlage ist ein Biskuitteig, der am Vortag gemacht wird. Ich habe ihn abkühlen lassen und über Nacht im Kühlschrank gelassen.

Am nächsten Tag den Teig in kleine Würfel schneiden. Da gibt es keine Vorgaben, je nachdem wie man es gerne mag. Bei mir wurden sie ca. 4 x 6 cm.

Die Glasur wird gerichtet. Über köchelndem Wasser rühre ich 1 Päckchen Puderzucker mit etwa 2 Esslöffeln Kakaopulver an. Dazu ein Klacks Butter und genug Milch, dass es schön flüssig wird. Zuerst dachte ich, es wäre zu flüssig, doch so konnte es ein wenig einziehen und genug auch wieder abtropfen.Die einzelnen Rohlinge mit zwei Teelöffeln fixieren und in der Schokolade wälzen, bis sie überall bedeckt sind. Überschüssiges abtropfen lassen und dann im bereitgestellten Teller mit den Kokosflocken wälzen.

Die fertigen Lamingtons sehen dann so aus:

Knitting virus!

Knitting is getting very popular again. I resisted many months to show interest but then it also struck me. I asked for help!

I already knew how to make knits but it had been years ago... A dear friend showed me how to make purls. She also showed me how to begin a row and how to end it. What she forgot to show me was how to make the first ever knits.

I don't know where this will take me to. But I think it might be quite usefull to know how to knit.

Spätzle - geknöpft

Spätzle are a famous German dish. Often served fried with cheese in tourist regions. I think it might be called the German version of cheese macaroni.

There are different ways to make them. The dough is the easy part. Only flour, eggs, a little salt and enough water to make it into a dough. I don't use a specific recipe, it's too easy!

And after I found this great tool in my basement (belonged to my great-aunt), I couldn't wait to make them like this! These are my favourite spätzle!
You simply put the pan-like tool on top of a pot with boiling water. The dough is pressed through the holes with smooth movements of the scraper.
As soon as the swim on the top of the water they are ready. Usually this is immediatly. Spätzle made in this way are called Knöpfle - buttons.

Instead of forcing them through holes you can also put the dough onto a plate and cut it into the water. Then you get scraped spätzle. They are bigger than these ones.

The third way I know is using a little press like you can see here. The result is a thin and long spätzle. The most industrial ones you can buy look like made with a press. But of course making them on your own is always the better decision.

My dish was completed with lentil soup from a can (yes, too lazy) and added sausage.

As I cooked too much spätzle, there will be a serving of cheese spätzle tomorrow.

I don't remember what day it finally started getting warm, because I lay down with a flu. But then suddenly it was the time to sit outside in the wonderfull and large garden of my parents. T-Shirt-weather, sunshine and cats hanging around!

The Settlers of Catan

This is my all-time-favourite-game! The Settlers of Catan from Klaus Teuber.

One of its best things is the variable board that consits out of a lot of hexagons, here in the standard version there are 19. In every game they are ordered differently and have different numbers so they never give the same amount of raw materials. Of course there are numbers that are played more often than others. Check them out to place your first two villages on good regions.

The raw materials are the basics of everything. You need them to build streets (wood and clay), villages (wood, clay, hay and sheepskin), cities (stone and hay) or to buy some special feature cards.
The game has a lot of trading charm. And if your fellow players don't want to trade with you, you can still trade with the bank. To worse conditions, but sometimes it is necessary.
There are not only your fellow players and the bank involved in the game! Everytime somebody throws the dices to a seven there is a gang of robbers who steal your materials if you have more than seven in the hand. If you dice the seven you can chose the part of land where the robbers steal even more. But that will be for your own good. But beware! The next time somebody else throws the seven and the robbers may come to steal from you!
The pictures above are from the new version. I still own the old one with wooden streets, villages and cities. Also the water frame is in hexagons too, not in prefixed parts. Both versions have their own charm. Only the wooden one is no longer sold in the stores. I will keep mine safe!

Next time I will show you the different expansions. They promise even more fun playing with a lot more possible variations.

This game is definitly 10 out of 10 points for me!

I wrote a children's story called: The magical Unicornherb (Das magische Einhornkraut).
Unfortunatly still unpublished. But I had fun drawing some pictures for the chapters.

The story is about the eleven-year-old twins Lara and Lukas. As they are forced to move into a new home because their dad has a new job far away, the discover a wood behind the big garden. There they find an injured unicorn, which is hunted by wolves. They help him to escape and hide him in the shed. Karfunkel he is called.
But Karfunkel doesnt get better. A woodfairy comes to help them and find this magical herb that can cure unicorns. They don't only have to fight with wolves and jumping through time, but also with their mum who wants them to feel at home and find a nice school.

New porcelain paint

I bought new porcelain paint and tried to paint on my cup in the usual way. But the consistence of this color was not like I was used to. No precisely painting possible. But it sure is good for other effects.
The funny thing was: The color seemed to be fixed after some hours. Like already burned in the oven. I still burned it, just to be sure.

I like this cup! It is very, very waterproof and liked to bath in the dishwasher every day at work.

Small Book Fair

For the third year in row there was the small book fair in Neckarsteinach, a small town in Germany, near Heidelberg. Unlike the big book fairs this one is only on two days, there are about 30 small publishing houses who show and sell their books.

We from the "LeseZeit" were no publishing house. We are a group of authors who have published books or stories in a wide variety of publishings. What connects us is only the written word and the fun of attending readings.

It was the second time I was there and it was fun! The lovely banner with our name is my idea. It's not perfect but I think I catched a good idea.

The Last Unicorn

The last unicorn... It's a masterpiece of Peter S. Beagle, first published in 1968!
The first time I heard of it was when watching it to the end of the 1980s as the animation movie became famous. I loved it from the start!
Although I didn't think the unicorn was one of the most beautiful I ever saw. It was the magic of the story that got me.
Making my own magical interpretion of the unicorn was one of my oldest dreams. This year I finally made it true.

The figurine is made out of Fimo, the German polymer clay, enstabled within with wire and aluminium foil. The horn finally is made out of MoldiMix, a special plastic that doesn't need to be burnt.

I love the mutts-comics from Patrick McDonnell and so I knew I will have them on a t-shirt soon. Well, not much to see from Mooch and Earl on this one. But I'm pretty sure there will follow others.

A lot of underwater life that cannot be seen from outside. I am quite scared of open waters because the idea of miles of water underneath me full of animals and life makes me feel uneasy. But seeing it on pictures is ok!

There was a third I made as a gift, using the logo of an online game for my cousin. But there is no picture of that one. And I think those will be the only ones made in this way. Further t-shirts will be only for my or after getting a shirt from others.

Hi! My name is Timothy! I thought looking into this blog is the easiest way to say Hi to everybody available! I sure am an adorable little hamster! I am a golden hamster and can't remember my origins. I woke up wrapped up in paper in a shaky box until finally I arrived my home!

I thought I'd look very handsome with this ear-attach. And I am quite sure it's mine because I found it in the box next to me. Well, my new mum took it away and said that it's not doing good to my ear. I'm still sad about that...

Discovering the fridge that should become my new habitat I saw this fella! A badger! And he looked angry! I think it was because I intruded his home... But maybe he is just an old guy not wanting to share his fridge...

I was faster! Suggesting him to share this place with me, because I am a good food collector, a great buddy and ... well... just me! Adorable Timothy!

I think we will become good friends! You must say he really looks quite tame, eh?

Elfenland

For the first time today I played the game Elfenland from the british game author Alan R. Moon.

The story is about young elves who have to go out on quests to become grown-ups. They can use different kinds of transportation (e.g. elfcycles, unicorns, dragons) for diffent roads (e.g. desert, forest, mountain). To prove their visit in a town they take a small roll of evidence. After four attempts the game is over and the one with the most tokens wins.

Pros:

It really needs a lot of thinking to plan your route! And even then your opponent can destroy the whole plan with one small chip defining the transportation for a road!
The board is really nice and I loved the pictures on the cards.

Cons:

The tokens are round! They love rolling away! I wouldn't be sad about square ones!
The game is for 2-6 people. But for 2 people it is too boring, because you may plan your route far away from the other and there goes the challenge!

From me it is 8 of 10 points!

More Vegemite!

As I told here I got Vegemite from some friends. I found out that I really love it! Especially with toasties from Golden Toast.
Unfortunatly 145g are soon eaten and as I also gave some away, the end was coming fast.

So I ordered some more! Luckily there are a lot of possibilities to order special food via internet in Germany. I also ordered some Marmite, which is british. I'm curious tasting it.

I have always been the type to prefer salty and spicy stuff instead of sweet. And I like the strong salty taste of these yeast extracts.

Sushi

First time I made sushi at home was on 1. May 2007, together with a friend. This is the second time I made sushi. Again with a friend for visit. It is a nice thing to do and fun if doing it with someone else.

I had sushi rice, nori, rice vinegar, wasabi, soy sauce and of course the bamboo mat to roll it. For the filling we had cucumber, an avocado, a carrot and smoked salmon. The carrot we steamed, the cucumber we used raw. And the avocado was forgotten... Well, this is our result:

Five neat looking rolls of Maki sushi. We ate them with chopsticks, wasabi and soy sauce.

I have to realize that the taste of wasabi is very different to the hot spices I know. Red hot you have to clean your nose. Green hot simply blowes through and hurts.

But I love hot food!

New possibilities with polymer clay!

This pic looks really strange, eh? It is a way to work with polymer clay that is quite popular. You call it a cane. If you have a lot of canes waiting to be worked with you can work quite smoothly without having to care about new supplies.

After making a huge amount of Monarch-cane, I began making beads and other nice things out of it.

There is still heaps of the cane in my fridge, so there will be a lot more to come.

It was October, the 4th, a saturday. The first saturday after my birthday... I went to the animal shelter and fell in love with this adorable little dsungarian hamster.

She is about 1-2 years old, which is quite a good age for this hamster, as they usually reach 1,5-3 years. I didn't want a baby hamster. I like giving older animals a nice home. And Michiko surely diserved a nice home. She lives in an aquarium with the sizes: 130x50x50, but it still seems too small for her. I let her run around in the living room from time to time (hard to see her in wake moments) and then I notice how much a hamster should run.

In the wild they run on the search for food about 8km per night. In the cage she has a running wheel, the same one as my mice have and she uses it a lot.

She is such an adorable little thing! Very interested in everything!

As for her running around I built a little bridge to the living room. She knows how to use it, that's not the problem. Unfortunatly she turned out to be sleeping for long into the night so I don't see her much and can't let her running around as much as I would like to.
Still she gives me the feeling to be a happy hamster.

I made this little fellow under the motto: gothic!
As bats are sometimes mistaken for mice with wings, this one is truly a vampire-mouse with batwings.

In the flashlight visible: the use of fur, still the same method as with the fur-mice before.

The base is simply a painted piece of wood covered with stones and pebbles.

My second attempt to paint a t-shirt. The t-shirt is 100% cotton and was much nicer to work on than the first one. As I already knew that the colour is staying on the shirt after washes I was also more daring in painting something bigger and more complicated.

After colouring the shirt the colour needs to dry, overnight is a good time for that. Then I throw the shirt carefully into my oven and bake it at 150°C for about 10 minutes. The kitchen gets a nice smell of fresh ironed clothing! It's very nice!

I am always curious about my abilities of painting. I have painted a lot as a teenager, heaps of pictures are stacked away in folders at home. But it got a bit boring one day as I have hardly any more use for pictures.

Then I started painting cups. A few paintings with effects, like the coloured paper from the horse pics.

One day I decided to try painting on t-shirts. My first one was unfortunatly on the wrong fabric. The letters started to tear out a bit, but the paint is strong. I can wash it with other clothes in the mashine, no problem.
It was my first try! No wonders expected!

For the letters I cut out the pattern on cardboard. Same as the stripes on the sleeves.

NaNoWriMo-Resume

The november has ended and so has the NaNo. I have managed nearly 18.000 words, that is about 57 pages à 1.800 characters. (In Germany it is more common to count in chars, not in words)

I am way away from the actual goal. But I am very happy! I have written a good 57 pages, my story has got a face and I will continue writing it as soon as I have time.

After watching "Over the hedge" this week and seeing Hammy, the adorable squirrel in it, I found these pics on my computer.
As they are searching for food and are most times used to have humans around, they lost their fear. Well, this fellow lives in a nice park with hundreds of other squirrels, they are not looked after and not in cages. But they got the trick to beg for some nuts!

They are a bit older. But I still love them! I love squirrels! You can see the pics are taken in winter because it has furry ears.

Finally: real mice!

In June 2008 I invited some new fellows to live with me. The castrato San and his girls Ichi, Ni, Nana and Hachi. Did you notice? I love Japan!

They settled in a selfbuilt home made of an old rabbit-cage-bottom (100x50cm) and an aquarium (60x30x30cm). This kind of petmouse can be held in an open cage. They can't see very far and are too scared to jump down. Of course there are always some exceptions, but my five are very safe in here.

Very soon I noticed that they could be happier. I included a second tray and more possibilities to climb. They seem much more relaxed now and use their space happily. It is now in a total 210cm (incl. the aqua)!

I am totally against buying pets in pet stores. There are so many animals who wait in the animal shelter to find a new home. And most people in the shelters want to see their animals well looked-after. Pet stores only want to make profit. They sell a lot of rubbish for pets as well. You might think you can find there everything you need, but that's an illusion.

Mouse-cages that have the size of max. 50cm should only be a mere transporting cage. Running wheels with 15-20cm diagonally can cause a lot of illness and misshaping. Not to speak of all the plastic that could tear up their stumaches when they gnaw and swallow it.
The wheel I have is of gnaw-safe plastic and has a measure of 27cm. I have only found the German producer of the wheels: Rodenti
Everything else in their habitat is safe to gnaw. And they do it! The wood I built with is coloured with a paint that can be used for baby-toys.

So no plastic, better use wood, cartonages and ceramic. In facts, nearly everything you would also feel save to give a baby.

This little boy has its origin in one of my fantasy stories. His mother is Dorn, a chaotic warrior lady and his father is Sgurr, a dragon. I like testing out my skills and thought about modelling a little baby that would hopefully match my imagining Simeon.

I used Puppenfimo(c) in the colour porcelain. My surprise about how he looked like after baking was big. But from the beginning.

The body shown above looked a bit like a young boy not like a baby. I had to change that.

The operation could beginn. Slicing up the body was able because this time I didn't use a core as I knew that he would only be lying down.

Mending the belly again and changing the proportions of the head. He really looked younger now. Not as young as I wanted him to be but it was the best I could do after this start.

Now I only had to reform his feet and fix his position. This was done after a good warm bake in my oven.

Tadaa! Out came a crispy little thing with a gorgeous colour. He was supposed to turn out white but this was ok as well. Not much paint work to do...

The wings are still loosily attached and I think I will make some better ones one day. But for now they do perfectly well.

NaNo beginns...

It did take some time to get back into writing! But it is also great fun and I see that I have missed it very much...

On the first day I wrote down the first sentence! Great! I can make it! This is going to be awsome! Now I only need some more to keep going...
Hey, thats an interesting spot on TV, I got to watch it. No, better go on writing. Hmm, I haven't checked my emails yet, and suddenly I am back surfing around on sites that aren't really interesting at the moment, but to do everything instead of writing.

Ok, I ended it there. In the evening I finally managed to come onto 1,406 words. That wasn't too bad!

The second day was even worse. I'm at a total of 1,745 words now. But the story is going forward and I think the further I go the more easy it will be!

I always knew I need some goal ahead to write! Here it is! Here I'm coming, watch out!

Mushroom mouse

Starting a new project. I have seen so many beautiful mushrooms in the internet which were made out of polymer clay or something similar. I was curious if I, too, am able to make one. But only a mushroom is a bit boring. It should be decoration as well as needfull surrounding.

My heart and soul in polymer clay were my mice. So my mushroom had to be strong enough to hold one.

I cut some wire fence and formed it the way I wanted it to be. I covered the ground with all sorts of clay that was lying around and I couldn't use in another way. It was getting really colourful. But I intended to paint it with acrylic paint so that was no problem. My mushroom is made out of Puppenfimo (c) and the capillary out of normal Fimo (c).

The mouse was the easier part. This little chap was in an adventerous mood and climbed onto the mushroom but then he got scared of his own courage and wanted to climb down again. Still looking a bit naked though.

I coloured the mushroom with pastel chalk. Putting chalk on it with a brush and then fixing it. And then chalk again... until it had about the right colour. Adding a bit more decoration... violá: finished mushroom!

My little chap got some black fur. I used some powder that was thought for window colour and clued it simply onto his body. His eyes have some gloss finish and he is ready to see the world!

The NaNoWriMo starts on November 1.
In this month all over the world you might meet people hastily scribbling down notes or working until late at night on the computer. Writing. Writing all month. Because there is a goal. If you manage to write 50.000 words until November 30., you get a reward.

Well, it is a very idialistic competition. A good chance for people who always say: "One day I will write a novel." This is the posibility to push yourself forward and to really sit down and write. Of course you can cheat, of course nobody controls what rubbish you may write down. But winning like that wouldn't be winning for yourself.

I am taking part because I haven't written much over the last few months. I want to get back to my old condition. So I am taking my chance and start writing a novel in November which has been in the back of my head for quite a while now.
I don't necessarily want to reach the goal of 50.000 words, but no matter how far I come it will be a good start! I am optimistic!

More mice!

More mice made out of Fimo settled down in my home. They became more detailed and it was fun placing them in their surroundings. Here I used a wooden tunnel for real rodents from a pet store.

8 white albino mice settled down in this playground for budgies. They were burned in the oven with the whole wooden thing. It was a delicious smell!

One of my favorite dishes!

It is an original southern German dish with its origin in Palatinate. It can be either served sweet with vanilla sauce or hearty with potatoe soup. I love the hearty version! My mum always managed to make a nice crispy salt bottom.

One day I was eager to make them on my own as I don't always have my mum at hand. But she helped me with the recipe.

You need:

500g Mehl/flour

1/2 Würfel Hefe oder 1 Packung Trockenhefe / 1/2 fresh yeast or 1 package of dry yeast

1/4 l Milch/milk

bisschen Zucker für die Hefe/a little bit sugar for the yeast

1 Ei/egg

Salz/salt

50g Butter/butter

Damit eine Hefeteig ansetzen. Make a yeast dough with this.

Den Teig in kleine Kugeln formen, wieder gehen lassen.

Form the dough in small balls, let them rest again.

Öl in Pfanne erhitzen/Heat oil in a pan.

Boden mit Salz bedecken/Cover the bottom with salt.

Kugeln darauf setzen/Put the balls onto this.

3/16 l Wasser/water

Dann Deckel drauf und zulassen!/Then cover the pan and leave it shut!

Jetzt kommt der komplizierte Teil. Du musst den Moment abpassen, wann das Wasser verdampft ist. Sonst werden sie unten schwarz. Als Richtwert braucht es 15-20 Minuten.

This is the tricky part. You must listen closly and catch the point, when the water is gone. Otherwise they turn black on the bottom. It needs about 15-20 minutes.

The bad thing is, I never managed to make smaller amounts. So I always get 8 Dampfnudels. :D But thats not bad, they are really yummy. I even eat them without anything else at all. And even cold on the next day they are good. Next time I will try to fry the left-overs in a pan, my mum said that is yummy too.

New Zealand to drink

Of course I also managed to get hold of my dear New Zealand on some cups. The one above is the first cup I painted and I only had four colors: blue, brown, green and black. I think I got hold of the Cathedral Cove quite good! ;)

This cup is a little bit of everything. I'm fond of my whale's tale and happy that the kiwi looks nice. I added yellow to my colors.

Davidoff (Davy)

January 2008 Davidoff entered my life. He lost his wife out of age and was sitting alone. So I thought I will take him and give him a nice end of his life. His previous owner thought he might be 10-13 years old! A real grandpa! But you can see his age, he does look a bit scruffier than the other two.

But the vet assured me that he is healthy and he just showes signs of age. I had him in the old bird cage and he was very curious. When I let him to the others he was so happy to be able to get close to them! Tommy and Snoopy were not so happy in the beginning. But it has settled down. Sometimes he just watches the others (seems to me to have a satisfied smile) and sometimes he babbles either with Tommy or with Snoopy.

The good thing is: He loves cucumbers! It was a joy for me to watch a budgie creedily eating it! And after a few weeks I also watched Tommy and Snoopy eating it! Good boy Davy!

Snoopy (left) and Tommy (right) are a male standard blue and a female purple opalin budgerigar. They live with me since 2002 and are now 6 years old. In the beginning it looked like having two male budgies, that is why Tommy still has her male name.

I did a lot of mistakes in the beginning. After having had a budgie as a kid I thought I knew enough about these birds. Two years ago I started to learn a lot about the appropriate keeping of budgies. I think it is my fault that Tommy can't fly any more and I feel very guilty for that. I try to do everything right now. I started with buying a large cage (it is still a bit too small, but its better for Tommy because she sometimes has troubles climbing long distances), feeding them a good food and giving Snoopy the possibility of flying in the living room every day. He doesn't use it, I think he is too scared... But I know he can still fly, sometimes it just happens... :-)

Tassenmalerei

My cups are dated longer back. I think I got these two gorgeous big ones for my birthday 3 years ago. I used a porcellaine paint that was in a bottle so I could paint with tiny brushes. The final cup is burned in the oven.

I bought an oven thermometer as I started burning more polymere clay things. There I discovered that my oven doesnt reach the temperature he is trying to tell me. I stopped painting cups because I wasnt satisfied with the permanency. I should try again these days with my new knowledge about the oven!

Meine Tassenmalerei liegt schon länger zurück. Diese tollen großen Tassen bekam ich vor 3 Jahren zum Geburtstag. Ich habe Porzellanfarbe benutzt im Töpfchen, sodass ich die Farben mit feinen Pinseln auftragen konnte. Danach werden sie im Ofen gebrannt.

Als ich mit Fimo anfing, hab ich mir endlich ein Ofenthermometer gekauft. So fand ich heraus, dass mein Ofen längst nicht so heiß wurde, wie er mir weißmachen wollte! Ich hab mit den Tassen aufgehört, weil ich mit der Haltbarkeit der Farben nicht zufrieden war. Vielleicht sollte ich die Tage wieder anfangen, jetzt mit dem neuen Wissen über meinen Ofen!

Birth of the mouse

One year ago, this mouse was born. I played around with the German polymer clay called Fimo and found it much nicer to work such little things than with the earth clay I knew until then.

It was great fun! Mouse after mouse was formed and they really spread out!

Vor einem Jahr wurde diese Maus geboren. Ich spielte mit Fimo herum und fand, dass es viel angenehmer zu arbeiten war als der normale Ton, besonders für solch kleine Figuren.

Es machte viel Spaß! Die Mäuse haben sich schnell vermehrt!
